Snowpiercer scene. The part when he said gaint sand bugs and the clip they used for the icon reminded me of tremmors. Movie Review Video The Times critic A. O. Scott reviews “Snowpiercer. ” Credit Credit... Radius-TWC Snowpiercer Directed by Joon-ho Bong Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi R 2h 6m In the mood for allegory? Have a look at Bong Joon-ho’s “Snowpiercer, ” which proceeds from a fantastical premise rich with real-world relevance. After a human-engineered planetary catastrophe (trying to arrest the planet’s warming, we accidentally froze it solid), the remaining people are stuck on a train that never stops moving. A few thousand survivors live in railway cars, sorted into a rigid and ruthlessly enforced social order. In the back are huddled masses fed on gelatinous, insect-based black protein bars and kept in line by a combination of propaganda and brute force. Toward the front, the more fortunate enjoy access to schools, nightclubs, fresh food and the reassurance that they deserve everything they have. An unseen, quasi-mythical entrepreneur is in charge, and a group of rebels have decided to challenge his power and the extreme inequality he represents. The sci-fi thriller “Snowpiercer, ” directed by Bong Joon-ho and scheduled to be released on June 27, imagines the world in an ice age where the last members of the human race live on a train. Jae Hyuk Lee Slide 1 of 7 The sci-fi thriller “Snowpiercer, ” directed by Bong Joon-ho and scheduled to be released on June 27, imagines the world in an ice age where the last members of the human race live on a train. Jae Hyuk Lee But perhaps, since a summer holiday weekend is approaching, you’d prefer an action movie. “Snowpiercer, ” based on the graphic novel “Le Transperceneige” by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette, is unusually satisfying in that regard as well. Mr. Bong, whose previous films include the brilliant psychological thriller “Mother” and “The Host, ” a sublimely moving monster flick, is a playful and rigorous visual thinker. Here he stages kinetic fight scenes in narrow spaces and punctuates the noise and speed of the train with moments of eerie, poignant calm as it glides through digitally rendered ice and snow. The violence inside swerves from slapstick to bloodshed and back, producing a volatile blend of humor and horror that pays tribute to the source material while coloring its themes with the director’s distinctively perverse and humane sensibility. Image Credit... Radius-TWC And if acting is your thing — or at least the particular pleasure of watching first-rate screen performers ham it up in a busy genre setting — “Snowpiercer” will not disappoint. The reluctant leader of the rebels, a back-of-the-train troublemaker named Curtis, is played by Chris Evans, his clean-cut Captain America charisma obscured by scruffy facial hair and a black wool watch cap. He is a stoical, heroic presence amid the chaos, which means he has less room to be interesting than the other actors, who provide some of that chaos. They include Octavia Spencer, John Hurt and Jamie Bell as some of Curtis’s fellow insurgents, whose careful planning and simmering resentments blossom into revolt after an especially cruel provocation by the authorities. There are soldiers in riot gear, armed with clubs and guns, but for Mr. Bong evil is never anonymous. He gives it a grotesque, human face — or rather a series of faces, most memorably Tilda Swinton’s, almost unrecognizable in prosthetic teeth and oversize glasses. She serves as a kind of spokeswoman for Mr. Wilford (Ed Harris), the enigmatic engineer who is both dictator and deity in this postapocalyptic world. As the train moves in its long, winding route around the globe, teetering on the edge of both sustainability and plausibility, Curtis and his comrades undertake a long march toward the engine. They are joined by Minsu (the great shape-shifting South Korean actor Song Kang-ho), a security specialist, and his daughter, Yona (Ko Ah-sung), both addicted to an inhalant called Kronole. Radius-TWC Like most dystopian science fiction, “Snowpiercer” has a lot of explaining to do. The idea of a high-speed train chugging through glaciers has a children’s-book charm, and the original graphic novel has some stylistic kinship with Chris Van Allsburg’s “The Polar Express. ” But Mr. Bong is interested above all in imagining how the whole thing might work, as a matter of technology and social organization. And so every episode of fighting or conspiring is accompanied by a dollop of exposition, some of it recalling the start of the journey (18 years before the action takes place), some surveying its present condition and some looking around for clues about whether or how it might end. At times, “Snowpiercer” recalls Terry Gilliam’s “Brazil, ” both in its steampunk décor and in its grimly satirical look at the workings of power and privilege in a totalitarian corporate future. Its lessons about human nature are thought-provoking, but perhaps not as memorable as its motley, eccentric display of humanity in extremis. And though the movie is playfully postmodern in its pastiche of styles and its mingling of sincerity and self-consciousness, there is also something solidly old-fashioned about the way it tells its story. Long, crowded and ambitious almost to the point of hubris, it reminded me a little of “The Poseidon Adventure” and other 1970s-vintage action allegories full of great actors struggling to survive. That’s a compliment, by the way. Disaster has become a matter of routine at the movies (in more ways than one). Planetary destruction and human extinction happen a half-dozen times every summer. It’s rarely this refreshing, though. “Snowpiercer” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). The language is rougher and the violence grislier than in most summer action movies.

Movie makes a lot more sense if u think of it as sequel to Willy wonka. This might be a prequel, cuz the film is like 17 years on the train, the trailer for this one says 6 years, this is probably the first revolt that was mentioned in the film where all the ammo went “extinct” so, if its a prequel Im all in for it. I liked the film. Le Transperceneige Date 1982 Publisher Casterman Creative team Writers Jacques Lob Benjamin Legrand Olivier Bouquet Alexis Nolent Artist Jean-Marc Rochette Original publication Language French Translation Publisher Titan Comics Date 2014 Le Transperceneige ( French: [l? t???s. p??s. n??], The Snow-Piercer) is a post-apocalyptic French graphic novel created by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette, and published by Casterman. [1] [2] [3] The graphic novel was first published in 1982 under the title Le Transperceneige, and later retitled The Escape. The series was continued in two volumes by writer Benjamin Legrand, replacing Jacques Lob, with The Explorers published in 1999 and The Crossing in 2000. A fourth volume, Terminus, was written by Olivier Bocquet and published in 2015, as a conclusion to the series. An English translation was released in 2014 by Titan Comics, [4] consisting of two volumes: Snowpiercer: The Escape and Snowpiercer: The Explorers (which also contains The Crossing). A third volume, Terminus, was released in 2016, followed by a prequel series in 2019. Plot [ edit] The Escape [ edit] After an environmental catastrophe induces an ice age, humanity occupies a 1, 001-car train called the Snowpiercer. As the story begins, a man named Proloff is quarantined after escaping from the rearmost cars, and is joined by a woman named Adeline Belleau: herself part of a movement to integrate the members of the back railway cars, who live in squalid conditions, into the rest of the train. Trying to rescue Proloff, Belleau is placed under quarantine with him. The two are eventually called to meet Colonel Krimson, passing through several different cars of the train. As they advance, Proloff and Belleau observe fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat, luxuries which they believed extinct. Krimson explains to Proloff and Belleau that the Snowpiercer has begun to slow down, and asks Proloff and Belleau"s assistance in advancing the occupants of the rear of the train, to enable the rear cars" disconnection. Belleau and the members of her group agree, but Proloff learns that Krimson intends to disconnect the rear cars while his friends are aboard them. After warning Belleau"s friends, Belleau and Proloff flee to the front of the train, pursued by the military. At the same time a virus, ostensibly spread by Proloff, is infecting others aboard the train, and the healthy advance to the front. Before reaching the engine of the Snowpiercer, Proloff breaks all the windows in the final car for unknown reasons. Belleau dies of the cold while Proloff is rescued by Alec Forrester, the engineer behind the Snowpiercer, who appoints him caretaker of "Olga", the engine. As they are talking, the rear cars are disconnected. Proloff replaces Forrester as Olga"s guardian, but realizes that the virus has killed everyone else on board and that his own days are numbered as the train cannot run forever. The Explorers [ edit] After losing contact with the Snowpiercer, those aboard a second train, Icebreaker, fear a collision. Several explorers are sent on a braking exercise, where they stop the train. Only one explorer returns alive, and soon disappears. 17 years later, Puig Vallès joins one of the now semi-regular braking exercises to avoid collision with the Snowpiercer. Puig disobeys orders during the braking exercise, so in retaliation he is falsely accused of murdering one of his fellow explorers. He is sentenced to fly a small plane on what is deemed a suicidal scouting mission. Puig flies ahead of the train and spots a downed bridge and warns the train, but the council want him dead and refuse to allow him to return and land his plane. Puig threatens to crash his plane into the train and derail it, while his lover Val broadcasts footage to everyone aboard the train. Their efforts force the council to spin the event such that Puig is now hailed as a hero for saving the train. It is then revealed to Puig that during the first braking exercise, the Icebreaker actually hit Snowpiercer, and its engine was brought aboard. The sole surviving explorer has since been tending to the engine and Proloff, who only talks to the engine. The council maintain the myth that the Snowpiercer is out of control and still circling the world, to control the populace with fear. The Crossing [ edit] The train detects a radio signal originating from across the ocean. Puig decides to follow the radio music to its source, and it is revealed that the train can travel off the tracks by mounting caterpillars. Living standards deteriorate aboard the train, culminating in a failed but disastrous revolt where many people are killed, and numerous cars and resources are destroyed, making living conditions unsustainable. The train finally crosses the frozen ocean and reaches the source of the music, but the explorers are devastated to discover there are no people -- only an automated signal. Terminus [ edit] With no more heat or food on the train, the passengers of the Icebreaker rebel and elect Laura Lewis as their new leader. Puig learns that Val is pregnant, and his explorers seek the source of the radio station"s power. They discover the radio station is actually the top floor of a skyscraper and the ground floor is a train station. They turn on beacons which allow the Icebreaker to crash into the station, providing shelter but trapping and critically damaging the train in the process. Laura has Puig arrested, as she holds him responsible for the fateful decision to cross the ocean and the train"s eventual destruction. While exploring the station, the passengers are seized by people wearing mice masks. The passengers are given food, but put in quarantine and inoculated for disease. The passengers are permitted to join the mice community, but are forced to be barcoded and blood-tested, and children and pregnant women are taken away for "special treatment. " Val uses a distraction to barcode herself and avoid a blood test, which would expose her pregnancy. It is revealed that the compound is a hybrid research laboratory and amusement park named Future Land. Its deranged founders, the "switchmen", have prolonged their life by using the stem cells of babies, and used the radio signal to lure all the other trains to them: There were ten perpetual trains, of which Icebreaker was the last of seven that successfully reached the station. It is further revealed that the switchmen have neutered all the mice and perform genetic experiments on fetuses and babies, in a misguided attempt to engineer a perfect human species. Laura betrays Val, who is taken to the switchmen. While this was happening, Puig escaped his captivity and recovered with the engineer"s aid. Under disguise as a mouse, Puig uncovers that the nuclear plant which powers the compound is leaking and slowly killing the population. Puig reunites with Tom (the former radarist), Val and the other explorers, and together they free the children and animals that are held in captivity. They return to the Icebreaker, which the engineer has repaired, but are confronted by armed mice. Puig describes the situation and appeals to them to join him and the other passengers, and many of the mice defect. The story ends in the future: Hunters have just killed a killer whale, and as Puig dies of old age, a glimpse of flowers growing out of a patch of thawed earth is shown. The Prequel [ edit] This series is a prequel, thus set before the previous original series. Part 1: Extinction [ edit] This volume is set before the extinction event that caused the ice age. Part 2: Apocalypse [ edit] This volume is set days after the extinction event. Part 3: Annihilation [ edit] This volume is set a short time after the extinction event and after Part 2. Adaptations [ edit] Film [ edit] Korean director Bong Joon-ho adapted the graphic novel to the cinema as Snowpiercer, which was originally released in 2013. It was released the following year in the United States. [5] [6] TV series [ edit] As of 2015, a Snowpiercer television series is in development with Josh Friedman writing and Bong as executive producer. [7] In November 2016, TNT ordered a series pilot episode from Tomorrow Studios. [8] In May 2017 it was reported that Daveed Diggs will star in the series and Scott Derrickson will direct the pilot and executive produce the series. [9] References [ edit].

A very profound and impressive film. clearly one of my all time Favorited movies without default.

Its actually a sequel to Charle in the chocolate factory. Wtf i was looking for the movie trailer just to remember the film, at first sight i thought i travelled in a parallel dimension. Never forget who i am i"m batman. This Film blew my mind. After all these years, still under a strong impression. Thank you for this thoughtful analysis. I hadn"t seen/read any other interpretations or commentary on this movie before. I was pleasantly surprised by the many thought-provoking themes explored within this movie. I wasn"t expecting much with Captain America being the face of the movie. I didn"t think of this movie in terms of specific political theories such as capitalism. Rather, I thought of it as an interestingly accessible way to present large themes that have been prevalent in science fiction (and other) literature for decades. For example, the idea of starting a colony or new world in a hostile environment with limited resources (think Mars for example) the problem of how to achieve homeostasis in a closed system. How do you manage population growth? How do resources get allocated? What is the history behind inequalities in resource allocation, ie how does classism start? The Machiavellian machinations to make it appear as if the masses have power when in fact the real power comes from the collusion of the leader in the underground (Gilliam- sp? as well as the top (the engineer. What to do with the inevitable entropy- ie parts of the engine breaking down. That was the most evocative to me: the movie"s allusion to Dostoevsky"s Brothers Karamazov when we find that the engineer"s solution to the inevitable entropy of the train engine is to use use children who fit: Tell me yourself, I challenge your answer. Imagine that you are creating a fabric of human destiny with the object of making men happy in the end, giving them peace and rest at last, but that it was essential and inevitable to torture to death only one tiny creature- that baby beating its breast with its fist, for instance- and to found that edifice on its unavenged tears, would you consent to be the architect on those conditions? Tell me, and tell the truth. No, I wouldn"t consent, said Alyosha softly. And can you admit the idea that men for whom you are building it would agree to accept their happiness on the foundation of the unexpiated blood of a little victim? And accepting it would remain happy for ever? No, I can"t admit it.

Snowpiercer fish scene. Interesting.

Chris Evans, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer and Ed Harris. This looks... entertaining. Snowpiercer netflix trailer. Forget the reviews whining about the plot holes (yes, there are tons. Pay no attention to those people who genuinely believe Joon- ho Bong is making a profound statement about humanity, society, or pending environmental catastrophes. Don"t waste time over-analyzing the film"s ending and whether or not it matters to the rest of the story. Sit down, grab some popcorn, and enjoy this stylistic and completely original action flick set inside a train, carrying the last of the human race, traveling endlessly around the now uninhabitable frozen earth. When was the last time you saw a film with that setting?
The plot is simple enough. Our heroes are third-class citizens, confined to a lifetime of captivity in the back of the train. Their oppressors deny them freedom, information, luxuries and dignity, for seemingly no other reason besides them being residents of the tail. Several rebellions have been attempted by the tail inhabitants in the years preceding the events in the film, none successful but the characters and their surroundings bear the scars of years of injustice and violent defeat. The lighting, costumes, colors, grunginess created by Bong during the first act are critical in establishing the dark reality that our heroes have had to endure for the 17 years that the train has been operational. The actors appear unkempt, worn, and at times exhausted, and portray their characters with a believable survivalist resilience that is necessary to propel the story.
Eventually a well-choreographed and terrifically filmed action- rebellion sequence takes place, and our heroes spend the rest of the film trying to get to the front of the train, forcing their way from car to car, to seek justice and answers. This is where the film becomes the most fun as it indulges in absurdity, grandiosity, violence and shock value. Each train car is a unique environment: a greenhouse, school classroom, slaughterhouse, aquarium? Each presents a new physical and psychological challenge for our heroes, and a new perspective on the essence of the train itself. If the viewer is wondering why the classroom car is next to the prison car, or why the nightclub is nearest to the front, or why we never see any residential cars, they are missing point. The claustrophobic environment of each car serves to heighten the peril our heroes feel when confronted by the bad guys, while also substantially increasing the intensity of the action. Even the bad guys must control their excessive force to a point, lest they risk derailing the train or cutting off their escape/retreat path to safety.
One bad guy of note, actually a bad girl to be precise, is the character Mason played brilliantly by a barely recognizable Tilda Swinton. Homely and unpolished yet borderline comical, Ms. Swinton hits just the right note as a merciless, craven and utterly repellent hag. Her performance embodies the tone of the film, unsightly, amusing, capricious, but most of all FUN.
